We are looking for candidates for a research internship (Master 2) at the intersection of the domains of affective computing and human-agent interactions. Virtual reality holds great potential for exposure therapy or for social skills training applications. In such contexts, there is considerable interest in understanding the relationship between the elements and events of such virtual situations and the user’s cognitive and emotional state. In this project, we are interested in identifying the important factors leading to experiences of social stress by participants interacting with virtual humans.
In this internship, the student will adapt an existing virtual reality software for social simulations to conduct an experimental study inspired by the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). The study will vary factors thought to be important mediators of participants social stress responses, including in this context the virtual characters’ perceived agency (i.e. the capability of influencing the course of events). The virtual environment to be adapted consists of a public speaking simulation with an audience of virtual characters capable of a variety of social behaviours. The student will adapt the virtual environment, the layout of the audience and their behaviours, to reproduce a TSST. In the study, we will vary the sense of agency attributed to the virtual characters, through varying experimental instructions and characters’ behaviours. During the experiment, participants’ behaviors (vocal interactions, eye gaze) will be recorded with headsets’ sensors (eye-trackers, microphones), as well as their interactions with the environment (movements). Specifically, the intern will (1) conduct a literature review on the effects and antecedents of agency on social stress in virtual social interactions, (2) adapt existing virtual environments and software tools to create an experimental framework capable of varying characters’ agency and inducing stress during a virtual TSST task, (3) design and conduct the experimental study, (4) analyze the results and (5) publish them in an academic conference.
The intern will be supervised by Mathieu Chollet (University of Glasgow/IMT Atlantique), Cédric Dumas (IMT Atlantique), Anne-Gwenn Bosser (ENIB), and Jean-Luc Lugrin (Würzburg Universität). The project will be conducted in close collaboration with PhD students, Celia Kessassi (IMT Atlantique) and Yann Glémarec (ENIB). The project is funded through the ANR MISSIVES project and is part of a larger collaboration effort between IMT Atlantique, ENIB, U. Würzburg and U. Glasgow.
Student profile:
Master 2/3rd year engineering school level, or equivalent, in computer science, cognitive science, or related discipline. Strong interest for interdisciplinary research and innovative human-machine interactions.
Required skills: 3D/game engine programming (ideally Unreal, C++). Fluency in English or French.
Preferred skills: virtual reality. Experience with multimodal data analysis. Experimental protocol design.
